Quintus Aelius Volusus (Abbreviated Q. Aelius Volusus, Q. Ae. Vol.; a.d. XII Kal. Januarias MMDCCLIV AVC - present) is an influential and key member of the Imperivm Romanvm. He is widely acknowledged as the creator of many of the Imperivm Romanvm's key infrastructure and is considered to be a key member of the Imperivm Romanvm senate. He is best known for having created the website, wiki and forum and for creating and drafting key legislation such as the flag and insignia of the Imperivm Romanvm.
Currently all web infrastructure used within the Imperivm Romanvm was created entirely, or in part, by Aelius.
Life and Career
Early Life
Quintus Aelius Volusus was born in Essex, Britannia to an irreligious family. His mother is a housewife and his father was a salesman working at the now defunct Orient Worldwide Logistics Ltd. Initially Aelius Volusus lived in Stanford-Le-Hope but moved closer to the coast in 2003, following the birth of his brother.
Ae. Vol. attended a CoE (Church of England) school as his primary school (ages 5 years - 12 years) out in the countryside wherein he learned about classical history on a surface level and had a minor education in French. During his time here he became a prodigy on computers and was automating tasks and taking over Information Technology lessons teaching his colleagues more than the teachers. He also gained an affinity for mathematics, culture and the sciences here researching all he could about the subjects.
Ae. Vol. has frequently stated his inspiration and interest for computers came from the video game Minecraft. This game sparked his interest in programming through the desire to modify the game in ways he felt the game needed resulting in him programming and learning the Java programming language at the age of 11 years old. He also frequently read books on physics, chemistry, biology and culture in this time due to a natural curiosity of the world. In doing so he gained an interest in history on the side.
Secondary Education
Following his primary education, Ae. Vol. attended a nearby irreligious secondary school (a sports, mathematics, and information technology academy). At this place he learned to appreciate the sciences more and developed an extremely deep interest in physics and also had a foundational Spanish Education and was certified a Distinction in a Spanish FCSE meaning he can understand and communicate in basic Spanish.
He also dated 3 different people and one of them ended up committing suicide by hanging. This lead to his more introspective and respectful character and caring attitude. However this event also made him more standoffish and ended up in him playing music and spending more time at his computer and thus finding Nova Roma. However, during this time Aelius Also found Lucia Aemilia Atella who he is still with to this day.
Nova Roma
Before the Coronavirus pandemic of MMDCCLXXIII AVC Q. Aelius Volusus found Nova Roma though initially showed little interest to it. However after much thought he decided to join Nova Roma in an attempt to redefine himself, and to further his Latin study that he had put off since MMDCCLXVIII AVC. He felt a small disdain for the world and its current way of working. Feeling that hubris, indulgence and work had become to prominent with little release from it all. He also felt that the Roman system of governance was simply better.
The first person Aelius ended up socialising with in Nova Roma was Gaius Usonius Nicolaus, another prominent member of the current Imperivm Romanvm. They both shared problems with the government and regulations in Nova Roma with Usonius not being able to have his name as he wanted and the same with Aelius Volusus. They also both envisioned a Roman settlement where Romans can be Romans and live according to the Via Romana. This is when both of them met Drusus Firmius Perusinus and created a failed experiment: Nova Roma Civitas. Currently this group is now a social group for a few Nova Romans. The only one of these three that are still a part of that group is Q. Aelius Volusus.
Currently Aelius Volusus is still a part of Nova Roma and is currently a part of their Twitch streaming team.
Hellenic Hospitality
Firmius Perusinus fell off of Aelius' radar for a while due to lack of apparent activity and communication, however Usonius and Aelius maintained contact despite allegations against Usonius of plotting, and exile from Nova Roma. Nothing ever came of these allegations. Though within Nova Roma the mention of the others' name gets magistrates riled up and unsure how to react to the mention aside from defamation.
Usonius informed Aelius of the formation of a new group, Hellenic Hospitality wherein worshippers of the Greco-Roman faiths can come in and join on a neutral ground from the Roman Republic Organisation, Byzantium Novum and Nova Roma. This was an attempt to inspire unity between the organisations and to move towards a merger for a better Roman community. This group eventually became the first splinter group to draw ideas and influence from all 3 groups, the Imperivm Romanvm. The idea to form a group to rival the rest may go against the idea of unity but due to corruption and such it was important to create this group.
Imperivm Romanvm
Initially Aelius was not a part of Imperivm Romanvm until 2 days after the formation, this was due to a lack of communication and invitation on behalf of the first Princeps Senatus, Drusus Firmius Perusinus. In this time Aelius was not a part of the initial senate but was a major contributor of ideas and heavily contributed to the development of infrastructure, funds, information, systems and other miscellaneous items.
Following the major senatorial reform in December by the Princeps Senatus, Aelius became a senator. This was due to his many major contributions to the senate, the Imperivm Romanvm and his apparent influence over the inner workings and people of the Imperivm Romanvm. It also offered a counterweight to Usonius Nicolaus.
As a senator Aelius brought in 3 different Quaestores and has passed 3 different pieces of legislation. As well as making the website, wiki and forum and is currently in the process of creating a marketplace for all citizens, a Single Sign-On service (SSO) as well as taking the Imperivm Romanvm from a community to a Non-Profit Organisation.
Personal Life
Political views
On numerous occasions Vol. has stated that he is against an absolute monarchy and giving a singular person power. Vol. vehemently believes in democracy for all through representative voting in the form of rating. This can be demonstrated by using this Github program by ncase. the preference Aelii on this website is score voting, but approval would be equally appropriate. There is an understanding that flaws do arise, but this helps to prevent strategic voting.
He also believes the princeps senatus et civitas title should not be held for life, this is an ongoing silent debate within the Imperivm Romanvm. The princeps senatus title was a title held for 5 years and currently is that way in the system for the Imperivm Romanvm, however the Princeps Civitas honorific title is held indefinitely. Following on, Aelius also believes that senators should not be able to run for the same role on consecutive years, whilst there is no rule on this it is expected for senators to run for a different role or abstain for year before becoming senator again.
Religious views
When joining Nova Roma, Volusus was an athiest. Following increasing conversations with Usonius and contemplation about his faith he has become a practitioner of the Cultus Deorum Romanorum with his patron being Apollo. He is very conscious of not delving into superstitio and minding his faith. Aelius is one of the primary researchers for the Religio Romana inside the Imperivm Romanvm.
The Camillus Program within the Imperivm Romanvm was created by Aelius Volusus who also is also the primary writer for the curriculum document for the program. He cites this is for his devotion to the faith and for the proper worship and promotion of such for the faith, including the faith itself.
Legacy and impact
Aelius Volusus likes to think that he has left a lasting legacy as one of the key people in the initial growth of the Imperivm Romanvm.
